Mark Shifflet,
Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Communication and Chair of the Department of Communication
"Even after years in the classroom, students still amaze me by using an argument that hasn't been used before," says Dr. Mark Shifflet,
professor of media law and online production. Before he began his tenure at UE in 1998, he taught a variety of communication courses at
Rutgers University. He has also worked professionally in international telecommunications. Outside the classroom, his primary interest is in
developing and researching multimedia and web- related resources for training and education.

Michael Stankey,
Ph.D.
Professor of Communication
Students describe Dr. Michael Stankey's approach as "up close and personal!" He uses nontraditional methods to make classes exciting and
encourage student participation. Dr. Stankey holds advanced degrees in advertising and communication, yet he's far from strictly academic.
He worked for a large advertising agency and spent some time as a marketing director. Dr. Stankey uses his broad range of knowledge and
experiences to encourage creativity and to help students see the big picture.

T. Dean Thomlison, Ph.D.
Professor of Communication
Simply put, Dr. Dean Thomlison enjoys people. His enjoyment of human interaction led him to an illustrious career as an educator,
consultant, mediator and trainer. He is a nationally-recognized expert in interpersonal communication. In his more than 35 years of
university teaching experience he authored and contributed to several texts and numerous scholarly articles. As a Kellogg National Leadership Fellow,
Dr. Thomlison studied intercultural communication in multinational corporations, institutes, and governments throughout the world. He completed
post-doctoral training at the Intercultural Training Institute at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Tamara Wandel, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Communication
Dr. Wandel believes in experiential education. A former director of public relations and journalist in upstate New York, she knows the value of applied skills.
Her classes execute communication campaigns for groups such as the Warrick County Community Foundation, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the
Youth Services Bureau. She teaches media writing, persuasive writing and grant writing skills, and through her classes she and her students have been
awarded grants from national sources such as the Maurice R. Robinson Constitutional Rights Foundation. She is the faculty advisor for the Communication Club
and is currently under contract with Wadsworth Publishing to create a public relations writing textbook. She is a 2004 and 2006 MarCom Creative Award winner.
