Communication Program
The communication program at the University of Evansville is made up of four components:
1. The Core
All majors will take a set of courses that introduce students to concepts and skill sets that provide the foundation of the program:
- Introduction to Communication
- Creative Thinking
- Media Writing
- Basic Reporting
- Basic Web Production
- Media Theory & Research
- Media Law & Ethics
- Integrated Communication Campaigns
2. Specialty Areas
Each student will select courses from one of four specialty areas to help concentrate their studies:
- Advertising & Public Relations Specialty
- Advertising Copy and Layout
- Ad Agency Creative Philosophies
- Strategic Public Relations
- News Copyediting
- Organizational Communication Models
- Journalism Specialty
- Strategic Public Relations
- Advanced Reporting
- News Copyediting
- Publication Design
- Choice of one approved Journalism Elective
- Multimedia Production Specialty
- Audio Production
- Video Production
- Advanced Web and Multimedia Production
- Choice of two approved Multimedia Electives
- Organizational Communication Specialty
- Intercultural Communication
- Relationship Management
- Team Building and Group Communication
- Conflict Management
- Organizational Communication Models
Communication majors have 2l hours of general electives to take so students will have the opportunity to complete more than one specialty if they desire.
3. Supplemental Area of Study
All communication majors are required to earn either a minor or cognate in a secondary area of their choosing. This secondary area is designed to provide students an opportunity to
be exposed to an area of study that will complement their work in the communication program. Examples of popular secondary areas include foreign languages, graphic design, internet technology,
marketing, political science, psychology and writing.
4. Experiential Study
All communication majors will be required to complete three hours of practicum credit and at least one hour of internship credit.
Practicum credit involves work related to the
communication program with organizations within the university community including the Crescent (campus newspaper), WUEV (campus radio station), University Relations Dept.,
Sports Information Dept., Admissions Dept., etc. Each student is required to complete three semesters of practicum experience.
The internship provides students the opportunity
to work with an organization outside the university. An internship requires 50 hours of work to receive one credit hour. A student can earn a maximum of three hours of internship credit.
